It’s been more than a year since Sony released its PlayStation 4 Pro, and just one month after the release of Microsoft’s similar (but more powerful) Xbox One X. If you’ve been sitting on the sidelines of this particular mid-generation console race, now might be a good time to jump in.

Not only are there are a bunch of good deals on affordable 4K HDR TVs to take advantage of the visual upgrades, but there’s finally a healthy slate of games optimized for the faster, more powerful hardware.

We’ve rounded up the best deals on standard console hardware and PC parts, games, and accessories so you don’t have to comb through those confusing, anachronistic holiday flier PDF files. With Black Friday starting this Thursday on Thanksgiving and going through Cyber Monday, be sure to double check store hours and whether a certain retailer is offering discounts for in-store purchases, online-only, or both.

The best gaming deals of Black Friday

Microsoft won’t likely discount its new One X console for many months, but Sony and GameStop are offering the first available price drop on the PS4 Pro, from $399.99 to $349.99. It’s a Black Friday deal, so act fast if you’ve been saving up for Sony’s new hardware. If you’re in the market for an Xbox One S, Microsoft is in fact offering its lowest-ever price on that device at $189.

Unfortunately, given Nintendo’s penchant for keeping its prices high, there are not many meaningful deals on either Switch hardware or marquee Switch games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild or Super Mario: Odyssey. But you can get your hands on the new 2DS Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time special edition for $79.99 if you’re willing to go find one in-store as early as possible.

We’ve listed each hardware deal under the respective retailer when appropriate. So while choosing Best Buy over Target or GameStop won’t mean saving more money, it does mean you have a higher chance of nabbing the deal.)

For the longest time, we’ve had an Oculus Rift headset in the office and we’ve been repeatedly
blown away by the virtual reality prototypes people have created for it. Soon, you’ll be able to try it
for yourself.The Oculus Rift consumer model, which we’ve been waiting for since 2013, will be
released in early 2016—quarter one, in business speak, so any time between January and March. The recent Crescent Bay model we tried really impressed us, but that was before the HTC Vive stole the
show at GDC earlier this year. So the VR race is in an interesting place right now.Oculus certainly sounds like it’s making huge leaps over the earlier model. The new Rift “builds on the presence, immersion,and comfort of the Crescent Bay,”according to a recent announcement, “with an improved tracking system that supports both seated and standing experiences, as well as a highly refined industrial design,and updated ergonomics.”
Also revealed recently were the recommended specs of the PC you’ll need to run this device. For what the company describes as the ‘full Rift experience’, you’ll need an Nvidia GTX 970 or AMD 290 equivalent or greater, as well as 8GB of RAM, an equivalent processor to an i5-4590, an HDMI port and two USB ports. That’s quite a high bar for many consumers to reach, but by early 2016
they’ll be able to match those specs for a little less than it would cost them now. And
those are mid-range graphics cards—in no way is VR outside the spending power of most dedicated PC owners. Obviously this is an important consideration for getting VR into people’s homes.
The next few months of VR development will be crucial. It’s expected that the Valve and HTC Vive headset, which is Oculus’s toughest competitor right now, will releaseby Christmas. Will the first to market be the one to win VR? It’s unlikely to be as straightforward as that. VR is something
that many regular consumers will need to try before they’re going to be sold on the concept and its place in either their videogames or their everyday lives. Seeing really is believing with VR—and
seeing how quickly the tech has advanced has been incredibly exciting. There’s now a timeframe for when you can finally experience this for yourself.

Mortal Kombat X on mobile is not at all like Mortal Kombat.

It has borrowed the name, but it’s not about fighting anymore - sure, this is technically still a fighting game, but the fight itself is dumbed down to the tedious tri-fecta of tapping, blocking and power moves. In-app purchases could also get annoying, but not terribly so. Nonetheless, we did enjoy Mortal Kombat X for another reason - hero development. Yes, it’s hard to say, but this latest edition feels a lot like a role-playing game: you equip your heroes with items, spend coins to upgrade their skills, while the fighting kind of takes care of itself.

Overall, though, this is not the Mortal Kombat you've been waiting for. It’s just a different game. A fun one, but not something that lives up to the sky-high expectations.
