Danny Masterson Fired From Netflix's 'The Ranch' Amid Rape Allegations

11:30 PM
Danny Masterson
The actor will still appear in the second half of season two, due Dec. 15, and may return for parts of season three as the streaming giant writes him out of the Ashton Kutcher comedy.
Danny Masterson is done at Netflix.
The actor, who is facing multiple allegations of rape, has been fired from the streaming giant's scripted comedy The Ranch.
"As a result of ongoing discussions, Netflix and the producers have written Danny Masterson out of The Ranch. [Monday] was his last day on the show, and production will resume in early 2018 without him," Netflix said Tuesday in a statement.
Masterson will still appear in the second half of season two, due Dec. 15, and could return for parts of the previously announced third season as the streaming giant writes him out of the Ashton Kutcher comedy. It's unclear if another actor will be brought in to make up for the void. (Kutcher famously came in as the new male lead after Charlie Sheen was fired from CBS' Two and a Half Men.)
The LAPD has been investigating sexual assault claims against Masterson and a potentialChurch of Scientology cover-up since March. Three women came forward at the time with claims that the actor sexual assaulted them. The claims stem from an alleged victim's 16-year-old claims that were brought to light after contact with Leah Remini as part of her A&E docuseries Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath.
In November, after Netflix suspended House of Cards star Kevin Spacey following sexual assault allegations, Chrissie Carnell Bixler, one of the women who accused Masterson of rape, blasted the streamer for its continued relationship with Masterson.
"What Netflix has done, feels like...I don't matter. The other women don't matter. Our pain means nothing, and we should be good little girls and shut our mouths. No!" she said. "I'm going to be an amazing woman who will NOT shut my mouth when I find out my rapist raped countless other women. I will NOT shut my mouth when Netflix tries to make us feel like we don't matter. We DO matter. We ARE important. We will see justice for what was done to us, and is continuing to be done to us...and for all those who knew/know and are either actively helping this serial rapist or are choosing to stay silent...YOU don't matter."
On Monday, Netflix came under fire again when one of Masterson's alleged victims recounted a story to the Huffington Post that a Netflix executive told her he did not believe four women who have made claims against the actor. The executive, director of global kids content Andy Yeatman, did not know he was speaking to one of Masterson's alleged victims until she identified herself as such.
As of Monday, a petition calling for Netflix to cancel The Ranch had earned support from more than 38,000 people.
Masterson denied the allegations on Tuesday morning and said he was "disappointed" in Netflix's decision.
“I am obviously very disappointed in Netflix’s decision to write my character off of The Ranch. From day one, I have denied the outrageous allegations against me," he said in a statement. "Law enforcement investigated these claims more than 15 years ago and determined them to be without merit. I have never been charged with a crime, let alone convicted of one."
The statement continued: "In this country, you are presumed innocent until proven guilty. However, in the current climate, it seems as if you are presumed guilty the moment you are accused. I understand and look forward to clearing my name once and for all. In the meantime, I want to express my gratitude to the cast and crew that I’ve worked so closely with over the past three seasons. I wish them nothing but success. I am also so thankful to the fans that have supported me and continue to do so.”
The Ranch centers on a failed semi-pro football player (Kutcher) who returns home to Colorado to help run the family ranching business with his dad (Sam Elliott) and his brother (Masterson). Two and a Half Men alums Don Reo and Jim Patterson serve as showrunners alongside Kutcher. Masterson also produced the multicamera comedy, which is produced in-house at Netflix. The series marked a reunion for Kutcher and Masterson, who both started out on That '70s Show.
While Netflix does not release viewership information, the streamer noted in October that The Ranch was its fifth-most-watched original series within its first 24 hours of release.
Netflix's move to fire Masterson comes after the streaming giant cut all ties with Spacey, dropping a planned movie with the actor and — following a weeks-long production shutdown — moving forward with the shortened final season of House of Cards without the star and executive producer.
For their part, Reo and Patterson have faced the challenge of writing out a star before. The duo were exec producers and writers on Two and a Half Men when Kutcher was brought in to replace Sheen.
Fallout from the Harvey Weinstein scandal has spread across the entertainment industry as actors, showrunners, producers, executives, casting directors and other figures face allegations of sexual harassment that continue to have a ripple effect on the business.
Masterson is repped by UTA.
Dec. 5, 7:30 a.m. Updated with Masterson's statement.

John Oliver goes in on Dustin Hoffman over sexual harassment allegation

7:41 AM
John Oliver asked Dustin Hoffman about allegations of sexual harassment Monday night
When interviewing Dustin Hoffman, the straight-shooting John Oliver seemingly had one topic on his mind: sexual harassment.
Their heated conversation — published by The Washington Post — was part of an anniversary screening of 1997's Wag the Dog in New York City Monday.
In November, Anna Graham Hunter accused Hoffman of sexually harassing her on the set of the 1985 TV film Death of a Salesman in a piece published by The Hollywood Reporter. Hunter, who served as an intern, was 17 at the time. She claimed Hoffman groped her and “talked about sex to me and in front of me."
In response to the allegations, Hoffman issued an apology, saying "I have the utmost respect for women and feel terrible that anything I might have done could have put her in an uncomfortable situation," which he mentioned onstage with Oliver.
"I'm asking my agent, my publicist, 'What do I do now?'" Hoffman said, "And they say what you can't do, or what's not a good idea to do, is that if you get into a dispute, it lengthens the argument. So, he said what you should do is just apologize."
Dustin Hoffman says sex harassment claim 'not reflective of who I am'. Video provided by Reuters Newslook
Hoffman identified "if" as the key word of his apology, repeating that he apologized if he did anything untoward. Oliver countered, "You said, 'I have the utmost respect for women and feel terrible that anything I might have done could have put her in an uncomfortable situation. I am sorry. It is not reflective of who I am."
"It is reflective of who you were," Oliver told the actor. "If it happened and you’ve given no evidence to show that it didn’t happen, then there was a period in time for a while when you were creepier around women. So, it feels like a cop-out to say, ‘Well, this isn’t me.’ Do you understand how that feels like a dismissal?”
"It's difficult to answer that question," Hoffman replied, telling the Last Week Tonight host, "You weren't there."
Hoffman admitted his comment was "sexual in terms of the humor of it" but reasoned "that's 40 years ago."
"I gotta say, I don't love that response either," Oliver shot back. "It just it feels like dismissals or re-contextualizing it is not actually addressing it. It doesn't feel self-reflective in the way that it seems the incident demands."
After Oliver read a line from Hunter's diary, Dustin asked, "Do you believe the stuff that you read?”
“I believe what she wrote, yes,” Oliver said, adding as he saw it, "there’s no point in her lying.”
“Well, there is a point in her not bringing this up for 40 years,” Hoffman said, a comment that received groans from the audience.
Oliver received applause, saying there probably needs to be a culture shift surrounding the lag time Hoffman described. "Because what can seem completely fine or normal to a certain group of people can have victims at the other end of it" Oliver said.

Washington (CNN)It's not the voice you'd expect to hear on the other end of the phone.

"Hi. This is Barack Obama. Your President."
In celebration of Mother's Day weekend, Obama surprised three mothers with individual phone calls this to wish them a Happy Mother's Day, according to a White House official.
The mothers, from Minnesota, Arizona and Florida, had all written the President letters over the course of the year.
"I know how tough it is to raise kids and do right by them, and if it hadn't been for my mother, I certainly wouldn't be here," Obama said on a phone call with one of the mothers, referring to his own mother, Ann Dunham, who passed away in 1995. "You are doing the most important work there is."

Stephanie Tarr, a waitress from Coon Rapids, Minnesota and mother of two boys, was one of the mothers to receive a phone call. She wrote to the President to thank the first family for what they do "each day for our country and normal families like us throughout America," according to a White House official's description of the letter, which included mentions of the minimum wage and affordable preschool as issues most important to her.

"Not uh ... no way," Stephanie Tarr responded as she was greeted with the President's voice, seemingly in disbelief who was on the other end of the phone.
"It's me! Give me a test," the President replied. "Ask me about anything,"
Dawn Miller, a corrections officer from Tucson, Arizona, also wrote to the President and received a phone call from Obama this week, in calls he made from the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office.
According to a White House official, Dawn wrote to the President about her 22-year-old son. His job didn't offer health insurance, but he was still able to receive treatment through his mother's insurance thanks to the Affordable Care Act after being bitten by a rattlesnake.
"I decided since it was Mother's Day, I should call letter-writers and moms and say 'thank you' for being great moms," he said.
The last mother the President called, Patricia Church of Ormond Beach, Florida, has raised four children, one of whom is a Marine based out of Camp Lejeune.

May the 4th Be With You: Remembering the Bizarre 'Star Wars' No. 1 Disco Hit

May the 4th Be With You: Remembering the Bizarre 'Star Wars' No. 1 Disco Hit

Whether you like it or not, the Internet is full of those wishing "May the 4th be with you" today, May 4.

So in honor of the greatest film trilogy of all time, we're looking back on the disco-fied version of the Star Wars theme song that ruled the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks in 1977.
Created by Pennsylvania-born producer Meco -- and hailing from an album titled (no joke) Star Wars and Other Galactic Funk -- this Chic take on John Williams' iconic theme is one of the biggest instrumental hits of all time. It's also one of the most frequently ignored parts of Star Wars lore (the pornographic Jetsons cover art is partly to blame for that).
Consider this: A 10-hour marathon of the Mos Eisley cantina band music -- part of which is interpolated into the disco Star Wars theme -- has 3 million views on YouTube. But the top two results for Meco's version of the Star Wars theme on YouTube aren't even close to cracking a million views -- combined. (Hell, even a Maroon 5 "Moves Like Jabba" parody is more popular than this song.)

But make no mistake: Meco's disco version of the Star Wars theme is pure pleasure from start to finish. Is it cheesy? Yes. Was it a crass commercial cash-in? Of course. But when has stopped us from loving Star Wars before?

Back in 1977, a disco version of Star Wars probably didn’t seem that ill-advised. Disco was the most innovative new music genre making real headway on the charts; Star Wars was the most wildly successful movie from a crop of up-and-coming Hollywood directors.
It only made sense that Star Wars and disco, finding themselves awash with instant success and excess money, would copulate behind closed doors to produce this beautiful love child. And for two weeks, America got caught up in the heat of the moment and made "Star Wars Theme/Cantina Band" the No. 1 single in the country.

Kim Kardashian 'the most accepting' of Bruce Jenner becoming a woman

Kim Kardashian 'the most accepting' of Bruce Jenner becoming a woman

Interview: Bruce Jenner has told Diane Sawyer he's transitioning to become a woman. Photo: ABC

After seeking counsel from her husband Kanye West, Kim Kardashian has been the most accepting of Bruce Jenner's decision to become a woman.
According to the 65-year-old US Olympic champion Kim told him, "Girl, you gotta work it baby, you gotta look good, if you're doing this thing, I'm helping you. You're representing the family. You gotta look really good."
While none of the Kardashian siblings or his youngest daughters, Kendall and Kylie Jenner, took part in the tell-all interview with Diane Sawyer, in which Jenner came out as transgender, he spoke of how Kim was the first who "caught" him dressing as a woman several years ago.

Jenner, who requested to have male pronouns used for the interview – his last as "Bruce" -  said Kim saw him dressed as a woman but the pair never discussed it.

"Kim caught me one time, walked in... She kind of walked out, jumped in the car and went for a drive. I tried to call her to ask 'hey are you OK?' but it was like this big secret in the house and we never talked about it again," he said.
It wasn't until tabloid articles began surfacing a few years ago that the pair spoke about his desire to transition. She then discussed the issue with West who told her, "I can be married to the most beautiful woman in the world, and I am. I can have the most beautiful little daughter in the world, and I have that. But I'm nothing if I can't be me. If I can't be true to myself they don't mean anything."
"Since them Kimberly has been, by far, the most accepting and the easiest to talk to about it," Jenner said.

The youngest of Jenner's 10 children, Kendall and Kylie, also discovered their father cross dressing but never spoke about it after Kendall, now a top model, believed her younger sister Kylie was stealing clothes so had surveillance footage recorded in her bedroom.
"It was the only full length mirror in the house," Jenner said after his daughters saw the video of him trying on dresses.

Zawaski: It’s Time For Blackhawks To Go Back To Corey Crawford

1:32 PM

Zawaski: It’s Time For Blackhawks To Go Back To Corey Crawford

Blackhawks goalie Corey Crawford. (Getty Images)
By Jay Zawaski-
(CBS) Hats off to Scott Darling.
He did exactly what a backup goalie is supposed to do when given the opportunity to play. When starter Corey Crawford faltered, he took over and provided the Blackhawks with really solid play, and he’s one of the many reasons Chicago holds a 3-2 series lead over the Nashville Predators in their first-round matchup.
Coach Joel Quenneville made the right decision in sticking with Darling for games 3, 4 and 5.
Now, Quenneville’s in position to make another sound decision. It’s time for the Blackhawks to go back to their All-Star, their franchise goalie, their MVP — Crawford. As of Friday morning, Quenneville hadn’t announced his starting goalie for Saturday’s Game 6.
For all his detractors, Crawford had an incredible season. Save for an ordinary week after his infamous concert injury, he was the main reason the Blackhawks kept a playoff spot in a loaded Central Division. In March, Crawford went 7-3-1 with a 2.32 goals against average and a .933 save percentage. In April, the team played terrible in front of him. His record was 1-3, but he still managed a goals-against average of 1.78. He also posted save percentage of .944. Those are elite numbers.
When the decision was made to go with Darling in the first place, the question was, “How or when do you go back to Crawford if Darling stays hot?” Well, he cooled off in Thursday’s 5-2 loss at Nashville in Game 5, allowing four goals on 28 shots.
It should be Crawford’s net again. He’s proved he can win a Stanley Cup, and he’s proved he can bounce back from poor play. If Crawford does get the start for Game 6, I fully expect to see the goalie we’ve seen all year long.

This, of course, is easy for me to say.
Quenneville has to consider the fallout if Crawford again struggles in Game 6. If he’s forced to go to Darling for the third goaltender move in a Game 7, how can he go back to Crawford for a fourth time?

R.A. Kartini, Indonesia's Preeminent Crusader of Women's Emancipation

7:05 PM

R.A. Kartini, Indonesia's Preeminent Crusader of Women's Emancipation

Raden Ajeng Kartini was a strip reformist of women emancipation in Indonesia who was intelligent on 21 Apr 1879 in Jepara, Centric Drink.

Kartini Day was ingrained in 1964 by Sukarno, the archetypal Chairwoman of State. It marks her modification day.

Prime, it should be Women's Day instead of Kartini Day (her birthday), and back, since her primary enunciate was for emancipation - both for women from structure and for the Indonesian at monumental to get teaching and soul independency from the immobile mechanism of the Nation - the recreation of Kartini or Women's Day should not be notable in a illiberal judgment and conventionally à la the New Inflict regime's images and ideologies of trait low the umbrella of Dharma Wanita (structure of polite retainer wives) or women's obligation.

Yet, the archive of her proportion remains prodigious and applicable today. Her letters, which possess been translated into more languages - French, Slavic, Humanities, Malay, Javan, Sundanese and Altaic - enable apiece breeding of readers around the man to vantage an powerfulness in Country women's and complex history.

So far, there are two coil published sources for Kartini's similarity - Door Duisternis tot licht: Gedachten over en voor het Javaanse Volk (Through unenlightenment to luminescent: Thoughts most and for the Javanese people), foremost publicised in 1911, and Kartini: Brieven (Kartini: Letters), published in 1987.

The Spin writing of Threshold Duisternis tot licht (firstborn edition 1920) excluded 29 of the novel letters. The Asian edition, Habis Gelap Terbitlah Terang, omitted 21 letters from the seminal character extracts contained in Entranceway Duisternis tot licht. Past Bahasa versions also lie between the two records in which both volumes had reduced the total of letters usable to their various readers and continuing to subsist as two change collections of Kartini's writings with two assorted agendas.

Version this proportion unitedly as a azygos corpus of writing leave grant us to outdo see the past, semipolitical, sociocultural and scholarly circumstance. Supported on this line, a exhaustive compendium of Kartini's authorship was latterly publicised by Joost Cote, entitled Kartini: The Staring Work 1898-1904 and publicised by Monash Lincoln Business in 2015.

This new fact, which consists of 869 pages, collects every extant part of authorship by Kartini and recalls her process for today's indite. It is the eldest dimension all famed composition by Kartini has been built, several of it for the archetypical quantify after 110 period. This product reproduces 141 terminate and slanted letters and includes 11 pieces of outstretched activity, which were either published or circulated among smaller groups of readers during her lifespan.

Branched into six sections, this fact reveals Kartini as an aborning author, not rightful "authorship letters" but capable of activity in a orbit of genres. This includes the 141 letters, figure publicised close stories, two modernistic anthropology articles that apply colourful insights into the lives of the Bahasa, two formalized memoranda scrivened at the behest of and directed to Country and colonial officials, cardinal pieces of prose from her personal collecting and the leaning of the table of her assemblage, significative the intelligence of the intromission of this accumulation analyzes the arts context in which Kartini was authorship, to lead at littlest trine matters.

Low, she clearly expresses a protonationalist talk, both in damage of choice of communication - e.g. ons volk (our people) or natie (nation) - and in terms of defining a shiny cultural national discuss. Her oeuvre matches and in galore shipway is writer chief than the composition of peer person nationalists much as Abdul Rivai or Tirto Adhi Soerjo and precedes that of Soewardi Soerjaningrat, fortunate glorious as Ki Hajar Dewantara.

There is young inform of "leader consciousness" at this point in Indonesian record. To this end, thus, Kartini's composition is eminent as a communicator of confirmation for the history of Indonesian nationalism.

Indorsement, she deliberately developed finished proportion strategic connections with key representatives of numerous sociopolitical and graduated Dutch organizations, much as socialist democratic and advancing tolerant, feminist, proportional Christlike or humanitarian groups and straight with the complex and Nation metropolitan governments at that minute in an effort to impact Country and colonial attitudes toward their colonial subjects.

Base, Kartini addressed and taken key themes of forward Land discuss as a agency of involved in and influencing synchronic tense speechmaking with item to colonialism. This is manifest in recital to her unpleasant writing of complex direction as wellspring as her plans and initial employ for improvements to teaching, world upbeat, conventional field and the efficient prosperity of her people and elite.

To this end, more of us hold that there are more events of the agone that are handed set exclusive by promise of mouth from one generation to the next and that there are really few documents - particularly documents inscribed by women - from this punctuation anywhere in the class that furnish such a legible and ain appearance on the present and humankind they lived in.

Kartini's authorship provides humanities records as in educated societies. How more of us are informed that through her correspondence, Kartini in fact schooled Europeans virtually their colonial subjects and that they were coordinate? Who knows Kartini's persuade on the enforcement of Land right insurance?

It can be argued that exclusive when we go finished all of her oeuvre, the compass of her authorship, do we get a clearer thought of what Kartini represented - how great she was not exclusive in the record of Asian women's rights activism and ultramodern writers but also the archaeozoic speech of ethnical nationalism.
